I don't have a lot of free time but a dearly enjoy my friends new and old. I don't think you'll have a problem finding fellow Americans. As for chatting, the best advice I can give is to explore! I know there's a 'Misc Chat' somewhere around, and 'Ask h2g2' is another place where you're likely to always found somebody around; and then there's the Forum for more serious conversation. Sorry I don't have links for ya now, but these places aren't that hard to find. Or you can just go around saying hi to people that seem interesting. That works too.
