| | Since this article was written thousands of other emoticons have evolved, in fact this humble little life form is now just as useful as the babel fish in communications. Another thing that has changed is that some smilies will now show themselves in other forums, instead of only appearing in the guide you can now find them in other applications such as MSN Messenger. This makes them even more universally useful. I have not seen evidence that smilies have migrated to spatial communication techniques but if any one finds this information please inform me.
