Divorce is made difficult. It's all very well saying 'to love and to honour till death us do part', but get real, we all know the average marriage lasts, what is it eleven? Eleven days, yes. People change, relationships change, kids happen, and a state of marriage does not account for these things. A renewable contract would make more sense.
>>What are the pros?
You make a shedload of money; if you're a divorce lawyer.

  | | From my own experience, it's just a personal thing that people do. Perhaps a lot of it being their upbringing. I was raised Catholic, and though I rather renounced a lot of that, 'marriage' seemed the right thing to do. It clearly broadcast to our family and friends our commitment to each other.
And we are now in the planning process of celebrating our 25th anniversay with a small number of friends and family, including a renewal of vows.
As I say, it's a personal choice and thing to do.
