This caught our attention just now, the 'hunt for the God particle':

'Our knowledge of nature and how it works is based on observations. What if we can't see everything? What might we be missing out on? There could be a "hidden world" out there, Wells says, where particles and forces are busily at work, all around us, but beyond the realm of our senses.'

I forget which philosopher it was that said "Ther are more things in heaven and earth, than dreamt of in your wildest dreams" The quote may not be quite correct either blush though it conveys the idea cheerup

there was an interesting bit out of the Tevatron recently suggesting there might actually be 5 types of higgs boson:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/18/science/space/18cosmos.html

this doesn't actually use that quote, but explains more of the theory and findings under it. There's various links off it to more detail.

I did like the quote from one of the team members of "this is something we should be able to poke at with the Large Hadron Collider."

'poke at' - I guess that makes the LHC the biggest, most expensive pointy stick in history then!

Just thought I'd draw all your attention to the fact that the first thread was about Paul Gascoigne changing his name.

That was in 2004. He's still called Paul Gascoigne.

Thank god he no longer plays football for England. Wayne Rooney would still be waiting for him to pass the ball.....

Blood will soon be flowing in the streets of Toronto as the G8/G20 summit begins shortly.

It won't make the Whirled News until somebody dies and the fires rage out of control so here's a preview of the first few shots fired last night.

I think they should hold these meetings on Iceland. The locals have already burnt the place down and they could do with the delegate fees.

Let's forget Shakespeare for a moment . . .

This just in:

The Republican Party of Texas has released it's official platform. Among other things, they want to criminalize homosexuality *and* they want to make performing a marriage for a gay couple a felony. So, not only the couple, but the priest/pastor/shaman/justice of the peace get to go to prison as well.

If you can manage to wade through the insane backwardness and falsehoods, the entire platform is available in pdf here: http://jaysays.com/wp-content/uploa...STATE_REPUBLICAN_PARTY_PLATFORM.pdf

shrug Nothing wrong with that. People in the rest of the world have no say in the US President, either.

They just wish it was reciprocal.

They also believe:
The sanctity of human life, created in the image of God, which should be protected from fertilization to
natural death.

AND:

Punishment options for rape should include death.

From the top of Page 3 of the pdf:
"3. We believe that rights belong to people – not groups; therefore, we reject the notion of group-rights and policies
that grant preferences based on race or gender. Policies of this type apply a blanket remedy before specific acts
of discrimination are proven; thus, such policies compound one injustice with another."

From the bottom of the same page of the policy document:
"Free Speech for the Clergy – We urge change of the Internal Revenue Code to allow a religious organization to address
issues without fear of losing its tax-exempt status. We call for repeal of requirements that religious organizations send
government any personal information about their contributors."

Only it's worse than that They open with "1. Strict adherence to the Declaration of Independence and U.S. and Texas Constitutions." in their statements of belief, and yet, a good third of their policies are unconstitutional, even if they got this crock onto the state constitution, the federal one takes precedence in law.

Americans with Disabilities Act – We support amendment of the Americans with Disabilities Act to exclude from its
definition those persons with infectious diseases, substance addiction, learning disabilities ...

Seems utterly crazy to me.
