Now that this thread has finally quietened down a bit, and also whilst I've got the opportunity of having this comment at the top of new a blob. Can I please play devil's advocate and address the original question with the reply, "who the f**k cares."

You folks simply wouldn't believe how long I've been wanting to say that laugh tongueout

Oh, I say... I thought it was an important
question, given that the films differ a lot on some respects...

GD, the question of who has the sadder life, us, for keeping this discussion going for so long without getting anywhere at all, or you, for patiently keeping up with it for all this time in order to be able to launch your snide remarks at exactly the right time, is probably one it is best not to investigate further... tongueout

Ah...

It's a good question, but it misses the point. It is not the destination that we look forward to but the journey. Sometimes it is better to travel than arrive.

Is the gradual demise of this thread related to our own discomfort with how JRRT can speak to the child within us.

I am reminded of CS Lewis's intro to the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, are we not old enough yet to return to fairy tales, and is that why the Jibe 'who the F@*# cares?' stings so much that the tread can be quiet for 3 weeks?

I think you're overanalysing. Myself I ran out of things to say ages ago, I suspect similar has happened.

Over analysis

Well prehaps, but then it is a large part of my job to analyse things. The title 'What did Tolkien Mean?' becomes a bit restrictive though don't you think.

To me the desire to talk about JRRT is actually greater than my wish to undrstand what he wrote or why I like it. It just leaves me in awe, the landscapes the stories Gandalf is a great creation, but so is the Ring ect ect.... Prehaps that makes me sad but there you go.

This is suffering the same fate as the "God - Fact or Fiction" thread <goes back to pick up the link, spots Strontium Dog and Adelaide Cat at it like . . . cats & dogs> which I joined very soon after landing here (Nov 2002).

I answered the question repeatedly, to my own perfect satisfaction, but no one seemed to take a blind bit of notice, and there you are still debating it almost two years on.

This thread's question was answered about six months ago ("to supply the lack of an English mythology") by I've forgotten who, and the answer is buried in the middle of a thread that just would not die.

Humph. <unsubscribes> See if I care. And catch me reading the Silmarillion? I've much more important things to do, like . . . em . . . sadface

So what was the answer then? Did Tolkien mean anything, or was it an expression of what he wanted to write (as ive heard said)

*wonders whether by doing this he can make the thread hit the 1000 post mark*

He didn't mean anything.

Tolkien writes in the foreward of The Fellowship of the Ring that it doesn't mean anything.

Well, maybe Tolkien didn't actually mean anything, or think he meant anything - that's not to say that it doesn't mean anything.

So, in honour of the great h2g2 thread topic drift we've moved on to bigger and better things (including the filmed versions of LOTR) so that we can just carry on the convo.

There.

In the meantime, a more interesting thread might be:
LOTR: what does it mean to you?

Quite easily, watch this: LOTR has plenty of meaning. Allegory abounds in that big fat book I love so much.

It's a story of personal development, the rise of the industrial age, how one person - however small - really can make a difference...

winkeye

I'm one of those bad people who doesn't always listen to what writers say about what they wrote.

I prefer to find my own meaning.

Which means that, really, I should stay out of this thread. But talk of elf is always so much fun.
