  | | (Pheroneous, did you say I was vital , bright , yet opulent ? Me oh my, I think one of us has a very tenous grip on reality. I really do hope it's me!... tra-la-laa la-laaaa... )
I think Radio 4 announced the start of Spring this year, somewhat earlier than is traditional, but who can posibly argue with John Humpheys (apart from all the 'Today' guests, of course).
I only asked about Spring, because it's the only season that has another common meaning (though we have Fall in the US, and no need to ask how it got its name).

  | | You are probably not reading this, Duncan, if you are suffering from a migraine at the moment. Migraine is caused by an expansion of the blood vessels in your brain. This normally happens when you are suddenly relieved from stress. The removal of the stress causes the headache. This explains why migraines often occur on Friday evenings, at weekends or when going home from work. There is usually a triggering factor as well, such as chocolate, peanuts, red light, flickering lights (such as a computer monitor refresh rate of 60Hz), high contrast (staring at black skis on a white snowscape), low contrast (reading in dim light), or just about anything else.
My favourite method of curing migraine is to detect the signs before the headache starts (visual signs and feeling of relief). I then reapply stress by worrying about something. The usual thing is to worry about getting a migraine. This has the desired effect of preventing the headache.
Headache is a word starting and ending in "HE". Can you think of another one?

  | | Heartache!
Once upon a time I too suffered from Migraines. The last, and worst, one I ever had was in the airport at Milan (Yes, G, I had finished my business, the stress had gone). I staggered from the toilets to the Pharmacy, and they gave me a tablet, one single tablet. I took it. 10 minutes later, I was on the way back from the depths, half an hour later, I was better. (There is nothing quite as wonderful as that moment when it is gone) I have never had a real lethal migraine since. I never found out what the tablet was, except that it contained ergot and was not available/allowed in UK.

  | | Gnomon, I kinda liked your description of how to avoid migraine. It reminded me on the HHGTTG teachings on how to fly: Throw yourself into the air and forget to hit the ground
Milan airport. Hmmmm - that place can give me a headache all on it's own...
There was a wee bit further up -- why's it called "fall" in the US and "autumn" in the UK?

  | | There are a few reasons that you might get hangovers. 1, Alcohol washes out various vitamins and minerals from the blood stream, and if you don't put them back you feel dreadful. The easy way to put them back is by having a tomato juice every three units of alcohol. 2, All forms of alcohol have extra chemicals in them, and mixing them can produce some VERY bad reactions. so be careful what you mix. 3, Some people just can't drink certain drinks. they don't have the right grandparents for it.
Oh, and by the way red dog, if you are bored, you might want to subscribe to the peer review, sin bin, and miscelanious chat pages. that will give you stuff to read, and if you respond to those posts, you willsoon find lots of nice differences to discuss.
