Ah smiley

Hmm. Are you a geek then?

Is there such thing as a non-geek Linux fan?... Hmmm....

Hmmm. I guess in some way we are all geek s, but I don;t think I'm really that geekish. I like Linux because it's better than windows, it does what I want, rather than what some computer executives *think* I want it to do. It allows me to fiddle and play, and then sort out my own problems when I mess it all up. It doesn't patronise me with stupid paper clips that say things like "Gosh! It looks like you're using the lavatory.. do you want me to help wipe your butt?". But I don;t think that makes me a geek . I don't have any posters that say "bow down and worship me, for I am root". Honestly. Plus I am very, very cool .

to believe self is cool without proof is prob sign of geek ishness

plus i can prove all linux-fans must be geek because i am not geek ish enough to use it, so obv geek ishness must be requirement. or just compsci-ness. if you wnat to make distinction between the two.

Hmm, fair enough smiley

I'm most definitely a geek ... in fact I'm proud to be able to say that I'm posting this from within a text-only terminal, as I've just bought a new hard disk and starting installing gentoo... silly

(you've got to love an operating system where you can still post on h2g2 while it's busy compiling itself...)

Hmm. I don't have any posters like that either, but I do have a t-shirt which says 'happy hacking', and another which says 'free software, free society'... heh... I still claim not to be a Linux zealot though. Hmm.

I've completely lost any further point I had, so, I'll leave it at that winkeye

Hmm. You don't *have* to be a geek to use Linux. My family do whenever they print stuff out or scan stuff in... or use the internet...

Alright, so I set up a Linux computer for all that stuff and they really don't have a choice, but... biggrin

Basically anything that I can't do with windows I either don't want to do, or wouldn't be able to do on linux anyway (not necessarily through linux not being able to do it, just cos I'm not geek y enough to understand how)

Yus, it's not something I'd recommend unless you savour the thought of putting hours and hours into messing with your computer for the sake of it. Me, I love it winkeye

Anyway, I thought this conversation was supposed to be about non-Linux things... hmm.

Ooh, I know, a Caius thing smiley ... I'm actually the GCSU Computer Officer, believe it or not... and I'm designing a calendar thingy to go on the web page. The idea is that people who run societies and so on will be able to log in and add/edit events, and so hopefully it will stay up to date...

I'd be interested to know if you think that's likely to be at all useful smiley

Hmm. Alright, so that's still fairly geek y. But at least it's Caius geek y laugh

I am RAG rep for next year, so if I ever get 'round to arranging something I'll put it onto the calendar thingy.

It's a v good idea. And society people are resoponsible for their own level of up-to-date-ness, which is good. As long as it's easy for them to use.

smiley very true...

Currently it's not easy to use as such, since it doesn't actually work yet. At least not completely. But it will work, and it will be easy to use...

At least, that's the plan smiley ... the fact that I'm currently in the midst of upgrading my PC isn't going to help too much, though...
