We had a death in the family recently – no one close, and on my ex-husband’s side, but a family I have kept in touch with, nonetheless. The recent widow phoned me to tell of her husband’s passing, and I e-mailed my ex and his brother and sister with the news.

My ex got back to me and said he would be attending the funeral, and commented that the deceased was, actually, only 10 years older than himself, adding lightheartedly, “so I’ve probably only got 10 years to go”.

But it set me thinking. I could, obviously, pop off tomorrow, or be run over by a bus next Thursday, but by the law of averages, I probably only have another, say, 10 years to go.

And now to my point, which is not in the least morbid, WHY THE H**L AM I STILL KEEPING MY PAYSLIPS/BANK STATEMENTS/GAS BILLS FROM AS FAR BACK AS 1962!!!

Far from making me morbid, this tiny little comment has spurred me on to clear out all but the most recent paperwork, get rid of all those things that involve a round tuit, and stop keeping things “in case they come in handy”.

At last, I think I’m free!! Just wish the body would catch up a bit!

hug hug hug to all, Universal Granny

*Smiles.*

Ah, yes... paperwork. Hate it, clutters up the desk something nasty!

Always look towards the positive, Granny! I'd be very angry with a bus if it hit you, so look both ways!

And by the time everyone's had a sort out, you'll probably have reconstituted a small forest between you!

(Which is no bad thing....)ok

So - since when did you start following the law of averages ? cross

It was 17,000,000 to 1 against you being born - but you were.

Besides - the bus driver says he wants the money up-front, and I'm still saving.

Evening, everyone! hug hug hug s all round.

coffee ?space tea ?space cider ?space stiffdrink ?space cake ?space

Great to hear from you, Mystrunner, long time no post! Promise I'll look both ways when I cross, can't have you getting angry.

Spike - that was some achievement! I can't even raise a smiley on myself at that time of the morning, let alone someone else biggrin

21st birthday cards, Smurfles!? I can beat that! I have the ones that my school friend of 8 and I sent to each other's hamsters!! In fact, I don't think I'll destroy those, I may send them to her because we are still in touch - let her do the decluttering evilgrin

Re-constitute a small forest - I like that. Witchone will it be, I wonder?hug

<puts hands on hips and fixes disorganised one with steely stare> Hmph! Still saving indeed! It wouldn't surprise me if YOU were the bus driver! And I have no intention of following the law of averages - it's just that sometimes these things are taken out of our handsapplause space space cider

Yes, Smudger, I've got a shredder, but last year I shredded so much the local urban farm couldn't keep up with the bedding it produced for the bunny bunny s and guinea pigs and begged me to stop!

I think this will necessitate a number of dump runs, the goodwill of the dustmen, and a good stiffdrink to make me accomplish the task.

Then it will be on with living until the inevitable......

But, do you know, I think UG may be feeling a whole lot better than she did 6 months ago, in mind if not in body.

Take care, hug UG

You see, I have the opposite problem. I'm a bugger for throwing stuff away that I should keep. I say each year that I'll keep my wage slips for twelve months in case I need them for paperwork. I never do though. I didn't even *get* a P60 last year either, so I have no record of my meagre earnings for when I get the Child Tax Credit renewal thingie in the next few months or so. I suppose that it'll save me having to do a sort out in fifteen years or so thoughevilgrin

Oh goodness me...the loft... NOOOOOOO!!! I had forgotten about the loft! Mind you i suppose thats why i put all that stuff up there in the first place to forget about it!!

I am lucky Mrs Spike makes me organised, else I'd be in a hell of a mess come tax man sending me snotty letters!!

Anyone hear that Sophie Ellis Bextor had been found dead...apparently she was found in a french footballers hotel room. Police say they are treating it as murder on Zidanes floor! laugh

Sorry if you do not follow either the career of aforementionied Ms Ellis-Bextor or Mr Zidane the quite good footy player, I have jsut wasted ten seconds of your life erm

Given your expertise perhaps you can explain why she has chosen to dye her hair that perculiar colour.

I find having a clear out is very therapeutic. A good task for a rainy afternoon. I've managed to be quite ruthless with old bills and even managed to discard some old university notes. Our trouble is having too much storage space - including behind the sofa & in every corner doh
