I can't believe nobody's noticed! Aside from the ask thread, there was the original thread about the wotsit test that you started with a view to writing an entry!

We're having another general election this month winkeye

The person in question has a serious mental illness. That doesn't excuse everything that happens, but it is a significant factor.

I'd be surprised if a fair few people on h2g2 didn't have some sort of mental illness to be honest - but nobody else comes across as quite so snide and manipulative.

It interests me, because I think it's hard to tell people's motivations especially in text. Likewise we disagree about Taff's (I think he shitstirrs for fun, but doesn't really have the troll edge and I don't think it's his intention to have fun at the expense of the community).

Yes, quite a few people with distinct mental health stuff, but virtually no-one who stays onsite when that unwell (at least not recently). I see alot of effort being put in by the person, and so don't like them being written off so entirely. I don't think you were here in the middle of the year, but suffice to say that I'm not an apologist and went through some fairly major shit with them. There are some behaviours I don't accept from anyone. But I also think that there is a degree of crazy that is outside of a person's control. The trick for the community is to figure out what it can and will put up with, but to also not lose compassion.

You're probably right Kea, I think I was just rubbed up the wrong way.

I think what they don't appreciate is that by flouncing from threads and pointing fingers at other people, they're basically pointing at the "offender" and saying "this person is a dick, and he's such a dick that I refuse to engage with him".

That then sets reasonable people off to wonder just what this "offender" has done, when in reality all they've done is crossed a line that doesn't exist outside of the "troll's" head.

Admittedly, doing the exact same thing on my journal isn't the best way to handle things like these, but it's not the first time I've had this person pull exactly the same stunt.

That all makes sense ok

For me I recognise the problem as a mix of things outside of their control, inherent personality and choice. We all have the last two, and the first one we all have to an extent but at *much* lower level. Sometime I find it an interesting challenge to separate them out, but in the end there is no way to know really and it just comes down to what is acceptable behaviour. I will call on things that aren't ok, but I also think that because I can't completely tell what is intentional and what is from the crazy then that modifies my responses. The behaviour still needs to be addressed but how it is done is more important.

I will say that the person is making a impressive effort with regards to their behaviour (despite how it looks from a couple of recent incidents) and I hope that doesn't get lost. They're also ultimately very good at responding to clearly set boundaries. Because of that I would encourage people to address the behaviour and leave out the personal snipes (to the degree that is possible, sometimes it just can't be helped).

I'm not sure. Most people won't know there is an election tomorrow (unless they read my Ask thread). And those that do probably don't care winkeye

The person in question has read it, but they're quite capable of reading any conversation I'm in at the moment anyway rolleyes

In general or right now? They've been suspended I think. I'm not sure how much to say otherwise. They've made the point elsewhere that they don't like me talking about the mental health stuff, which is a fair point. But they've also made my life a misery here, and often pissed off alot of people, so I'm starting to feel like the needs of the community should take precedent. I wish I had the energy to start a thread about it and let everyone just talk it all out and come up with solutions.

Would that not just exacerbate things and make it look like you're trying to stir up a mob?

I've been wondering about that. I've seen accusations of mob stirring recently and it worries me that this is now happening here (accusations when people start talking about problems). We have a long history of talking about problems within the community, and I'd hate to see us lose that.

I think it would come down to how it was done. Also, I have a pretty strong record, onsite and offsite, of standing up for Effers and arguing for her continued inclusion in the community.

I just don't see how the problem can be sorted if it's not talked about shrug

Thanks smiley

I've just been reading your blogpost on google+, making my way through the comments. Do you feel the same about it 6 months on? Given that I don't use my RL name on the internet, and have several different aliases for various parts of the web, I'm intrigued by the idea of a social networking tool that gives me more choice about how and who I connect with.

It's a ghost town. Google+ acts as an echo chamber at the moment, where people copy and paste their Facebook & Twitter content, because there's no reason to commit any time to using it.

Google will keep forcing people to use it by integrating it with search, leaving themselves wide open to investigations and lawsuits.
