YERTIZ!

The Devon Flag. Fly it with pride

Hello there Unknown Visitor, and welcome to the home of Parrferris!

Infinite Improbability Drive
Drink up thy zider!

I'm Parrferris. After another stint in Torbay (the alleged English Riviera), I now live in a converted pigsty in a remote corner of south Devon. I moved at one stage a few years back to the Far East - the far east of Devon, that is, where I wrote this entry of which I'm rather proud. I work for the grocery arm of the world's biggest consumer co-operative, about which I'm rather less happy. I walk a lot, I eat a lot, I watch too much telly and I've been an unapologetic Doctor Who fan all my life (long before it became fashionable). And I don't get to spend enough time on h2g2! This is all you probably need to know about me; in fact it's probably all there is to know!

If you want to get a clearer picture of me, imagine:
The calm serenity of Basil Fawlty
The level temper of Victor Meldrew
The sophistication of Frank Spencer
The open-minded liberalism of Alf Garnett
The good looks of Davros
The athletic physique of Jabba the Hutt
The intelligence of Father Dougal
The sexual magnetism of Mr Bean
The cheerful optimism of Marvin

I joined h2g2 just before the site disappeared, so I spent my first few weeks on the Yahboo chat site (it seems so long ago now). Despite everything, I managed to make friends with some splendid people, most of whom are now back here in Auntie's ample bosom.

Edited Enties

To save scrolling down, here are the pitifully few edited entries I have contributed to the Guide. Hopefully, seeing the brevity of this list every time I look at my PS will shame me into writing more!

Scrumpy (Feb 25, 2002) Solo, could probably do with updating,
Gus Honeybun - Puppet (Jun 12, 2002) Solo, A hero!
Sidmouth and The Sid Valley, Devon, England. (Nov 14, 2005) Solo, my favourite entry about one of my favourite places
Clotted Cream (March 17, 2008) Solo Anyone who knows me would think it inevitable that I would write this entry eventually. Only my fourth solo entry in about seven years on h2g2 - well, I'm a slow writer!
Devon, UK (Nov 15, 1999) Contributor The date's misleading, as in fact I was peripherally involved in rewriting the whole entry from scratch in 2006
Great Walks (Mar 23, 2001) Contributor (actually, precisely one word of this is mine so I don't really deserve any credit - I'll take it where I can get it, though!)
Revels - Chocolates That Surprise (Oct 26, 2006) Contributor
Great Radio Shows (Jun 27, 2003) Contributor
Wonderful Rivers (Jun 20, 2003) Contributor, the bit about the Dart, of course.
Devon's Towns and Countryside (Apr 7, 2006) Contributor
Plymouth Contributor Played a small part in the 2008 update of this entry.

I am 'Keeper of Badgers'!

It is my duty to oversee all the many badger-related issues on H2G2, and to protect all the badgers that live within the guide.

The oldest and wisest of these brocks is Fred, and the youngest addition to the h2g2 sett is little Elly.

Devon

I'm lucky enough to live in England's lovliest county, Devon. I'm originally from Dartmouth an ancient borough and port in the south of the county. Unfortunately, work forced me to move just a few miles up the line to Paignton, the least attractive of the three Torbay towns, and part of one of Britain's most popular seaside resorts, where I lived for several years. Fate then dealt me a kinder hand, as the job took me to Sidmouth, a beautiful seaside town stuck in a timewarp. Most recently I returned to work in Dartmouth, to which I walk several miles every day from the aforementioned pigsty.

To learn more about the most beautiful place in the world, why not visit BBC Devon Online for news, features and pictures.

For several years as a kid, I lived in the pretty Yorkshire town of Holmfirth which has probably the best community website I have seen. The town is, of course, best known as the location for the long-running comedy series Last of the Summer Wine

Later, my family moved to Gwynedd. As a teenager I was involved in the campaign to rebuild the nearby Welsh Highland Railway. At last progress is being made, from Caernarfon in the north and from Porthmadog in the south.

The greatest television series ever - do I even have to mention the name? (Well, let's face it, the graphic is a bit of a giveaway, isn't it?)

I'd forgotten about this in all the excitement of today's news, but up till then it was the best thing to happen all day...

As I was walking along the lane on my way home shortly before midnight tonight, I spotted a tiny green glint low down in the hedge. I tried to examine it using my torch but I couldn't get in close enough amongst the foliage to see what it was, so I pressed on. About 200 yards further on I rounded a bend next to a lovely old house called Great Coombe and was met by a remarkable sight. It looked for all the world as if someone had planted a number of little green LEDs either side of the road. This time I was able to get close to one by the gate of the house and could pick out an insect - yes, they were glow worms. I've never seen any before in my life and I was utterly enchanted.

In view of the good news when I got home and logged on to my computer, I've now decided that seeing glow worms must be a good omen, so I hope to spot some more soon! Well, superstitions have to start somewhere...

Naughty Naughtie
Dec 6, 2010

I've got to mention James Naughtie's little slip-up on Today just before the 8 o'clock news this morning. Well, "Jeremy Hunt the Culture Secretary" is an accident waiting to happen really!laugh The whole thing was improved no end by the supposed 'coughing fit' that followed the spoonerism - shades of "do shut up, Aggers".

Alas, some miseryguts complained apparently, so I won't be surprised if the incident is excised from the iPlayer.

He lives in a house, a very small house, in the country
Sep 30, 2010

I've just moved into my new abode at last. It's a lovely little place deep in the South Hams countryside. Basically, once you reach the back of beyond, take the road towards the middle of nowhere, turn left down a lane which has grass growing down the middle and eventually you come to one of those tiny forgotten hamlets in which this part of the world abounds. There you'll find my little place nestling within the bounds of my brother's palatial residence.

My brother informs me that it used to be a pigsty. Everyone seems to find that funny...

Tragic Events
Jun 2, 2010

People know how much I love Dartmouth, my home town. Well, last week I had the dubious fortune to have a 'front seat' view of a disastrous fire, probably the worst destruction to befall the town since a Luftwaffe raid in (I think) 1942. Several ancient buildings were destroyed or severely damaged (although the BBC describes them as Tudor, historians believe that the lower floors are rather earlier and were then extended upwards and outwards) and quite a number of people lost their homes or their livelihoods.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/10189310.stm

My workplace is the flat-roofed building with the bow window visible in the video on the above link - so you can see that were within about 30 feet of the affected buildings. Those shots were taken at nightfall, by the way, probably about 8 hours after the fire started and well past its height. We had to close but weren't asked to leave the building ourselves.

The following day we opened but had to trade from our rear fire exit - very strange! The only good news is that we have been able to offer jobs to several people who lost their workplace in the blaze.

Courtesy of the local library...
Apr 27, 2010

Just passing through this morning having signed up to my local library. Alas my old PC blew up a while back so I've been offline for some time. Couldn't stay away totally, of course - I've been lurking occasionally from work. Unfortunately I haven't dared to post; although there's no specific rule banning us from going on the net I suspect there might be because the people that make such decisions don't realise that we can (well we can get to h2g2 at least, via the link the company kindly provided to the BBC Weather site)!

I've noticed that change is in the air, so I thought now would be a good time to return...
