A Conversation for A History of 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'

Tertiary phase: Problems!!!!!

Post 1

After listening to the first part of the tertiary phase has anyone else noticed some inconsistencies.
At the end of the secondary phase we left our heroes on a planet talking to an old man and his cat about his role in running the universe.
After learning that Zaphod may have been involved in the destruction of the Earth, Arthur stole the Heart of Gold, with that beautiful sexy archaelogist Lintilla, leaving Zaphod, Ford and Zarniwoop stranded on the planet.

So how come at the start of the tertiary phase both Arthur and Ford are again stranded on prehistoric Earth?
How did Zaphod regain the Heart of Gold?
Why has Trillian reappeared, we hadn't heard from her since the incident with the Haganemnons?
What has happened to Lintilla?
What has happened to Zarniwoop? Do we care what has happened to Zarniwoop?
Why is Marvin on a marsh planet with only one good leg and alot of flippity floppity mattresses?

DO WE REALLY CARE????

Or is this just the universe going on the fritz again and sticking two fingers up at everyone!!!!!

Also finding out that The HitchHikers finance department were going to build an office on the planet Earth.
What is their annual financial income?
Would they get a tax break from the government of Earth?
Would they get a tax break from the intergalactic government?
Will we be seeing soon Playbeing in the local corner shops on the top shelves?
How would you apply for a job with them?

In the end only one thing matters and that is IT IS BACK, IT IS HERE, AND IN SOME OTHER PARALLEL UNIVERSE IT HAS NEVER HAPPENED (THANK ZARQUON WE LIVE IN THIS UNIVERSE)
Stay tuned for the next exciting installment of THE HITCHHIKERS GUIDE TO THE GALAXY

Ford explained it. Eddie's in the time space continuum.
This Eddie has a lot to answer for!

Seagull's Lost Horizon

The second series was all an hullication on Zaphods part, so that's why Ford And Arthur are where they are as that's where they were at the end of series one.

Zaphod and Trillian (and Marvin for that matter) were last heard being eaten my a haggunenon, in the guise of the ravounous bug blatter beats of traal, how they got away and got the star ship heart of gold back isn't explained.

But if you read the books that's where they all are at the start of lisf the universe and everything.

Seagull's Lost Horizon

Well actually, come to think of it, in fit the seventh (a christmas episode rather the the first episode of the second series), Zaphod explaines how he escaped and went to the Hitchhikers offices, and that Marvin ended up there too.

When asked how he got the ship back Zaphod says he got lucky, and in the first new episode Trillian say Zaphod was found wondering the Hitchhikers offices halucating.

I suspose you could say Trillain got lucky got the ship back and found Zaphod.

To all.
So if Zaphod is hallucinating then HOW do we know that Arthur, Ford, Trillian and Marvin exist. Come to think of it how do we know we exist and are not the rambling images in Zaphod's hallucination. Makes you think!!
If it is the eddies in the space/time continuim then I am right and the universe has gone on the fritz again and sticking two fingers up at us.
Next question will Ford, if he exists (see first part of the arguement), ever find the perfect dry Martini and if so will he jump in and out of it to relive his old days as a lemon?

'Ford' replies before 'Arthur' even asks about the gin.

Then again, the biggest single inconsistency in all formats of h2g2(the series), which has niggled at me since I first read the books, is this.

I can buy the existence of an entity called the Babel Fish, that once aurally inserted enables you to inastantly comprehend anything said in any known language. Thus the howling, screeching and snotty snorting of Vogon speech resolves itself into normal, if unpleasant, English in Arthur Dent's ears.

But how come Arthur is also suddenly enabled to **read written text** on board the Vogon ship, the Heart of Gold, the Disaster Zone stunt ship and the Golgafrincham ark?

Surely "do not press this button" and "do not touch this button again", not to mention "Telephone sanitiser Class D?" and "marketing executive" would be written in alien alphabets and as incomprehensible to Arthur as, say, Cyrillic, Coptic or Mandarin Chinese? And even if he could sound the words, aren't they likely to be something incomprehensible in an alien language?

Is there a secondary power in the Babel Fish that feeds back into the brain, cuts into the optic / neural processing circuits, and enables you to read and make sense of any known alien orthography? Looking at alien text, does it swirl and dissolve in front of the eyes, and reform itself as Roman alphabet characters presenting the meaning in perfect English? (or indeed, into whatever spoken language and written orthography the being is most familiar with?)

This conundrum niggles at me. (Similarly, nobody on Earth would have worn a Babel Fish, so how did they understand Ford Prefect when he first arrived from Betelgeuse? What sort of crash-course did he take to enable himself to speak perfect English with a south-eastern British accent, prior to arrival?)

"What you read is not what is written anyways.

Well most tiems you wil only skim the words and make a coherent sequence of them. Liek in you need olny the fsirt and lsat lretts to fnid out waht it syas. Even omitting the inbetween vowels completely kps mkng sme snse.

What if the 'Babelfish' helps interpreting the tokens as used for language [d=-t p^#ss t@!s bu&&0n a&@|n] you only need a little help.

The 'Babelfish' interpretes the brainwaves of your visual cortex and translates them into you written language processing center. smiley - smiley "
