getting back to casting. I just thought I throw in my two pennoths.
Alan Rickman is the Patrician. same age, same face, same snarl, same air of total control, same everything.
Sandra Bullock as Susan is to old, even in thief of time she's only in her mid 20's. I did like the Christina Ricci suggestion,
Tony Robinson would be a great Nobby but a bit old possibly.
I don't know if it's me but everyone seems to be name actors much older than my thoughts on the characters.
Rincewind would now be in his late 30's, early 40's so possibly a Mr Bean era Rowen Atkinson with Blackadder facial attachment.
Vimes is in his 50's but if Rickman is Patrician you would need someone of similar age. If you take Nightwatch as a guide Noddy is ten years younger than Vimes and Colon is between 5 and 10 years older. Miss/Mrs Palm was in her mid 20's then so would be in her early to mid 60's "now". Reg Shoe was in his thirties when he was killed. Sybill is in her late 40's,early 50's.
In my eye's Carrot,Angua and Cheri Littlebottom are all mid to late 20's though of course dwarves are a special case.
If they were going to do a tale of Ankh Morpack (and they should because the Watch stories are the best)
I would have thought
Vimes - Snarly gritty weather beaten 50, - (the guy from The limey, not sure of his name)possibly Terence Stamp
Nobby - little monkey features in his 30's or 40's - Mackenzie Crook
Colon - Big, old campigner in his 60's - Warren Clark
Carrot - Huge, brick shithouse type figure mid to late 20's Orange Hair-
Angua - Blond, Fairly busty, Mid to late 20's, tall, evil hungry look in her eye. -
Cheri - 20's or 30's, small, beard, female, likes leather skirts - a younger Caroline Quintin
Detritus - Micheal Clark Duncan
Reg Shoe -
I'm sure I'll think of more.

is that the guy from the Limey or Gangster Number 1.
I know he was in Clockwork Orange but that was 30 years ago. He might have changed a bit since then. Still good call.

Gangster No 1.
Terence Stamp was in The Limey, but they do look familiar. Mind you, He'd be quite good too

Ah, MR PRatchett, never has such a set of finer books been written, if i could i'd make a film, but of course i have neither the funds nor the patience. however i am a budding actor (as everyone these days is) however if i could be a part in a Discworld/ Terry Pratchett film, i would almost certainly play the part of Crpl. Nobby Nobbs, that lovable little rogue! but i'd settle for Sam Vimes, thanks for listening! bye!

So did anyone catch Hogfather over the christmas season? What did you all make of the casting?

I watched it! I thought the casting was pretty good, although I was a little disappointed that Death was simply a skeleton puppet The guy who played Teatime was absolutely spot on and I thought David Jason made a great Albert

I think they didn't have quite enough money to do the main character in CGI - the voice was good, and if they could just have got the facial bones articulated it would have been fine. I don't think the Danish guy who played the physical part of death (didn't do the voice) would have been too chuffed to hear you thought he was a puppet!
I thought David Jason was great too. Was a bit disappointed by the wizards though, and the fact that they skipped the librarian altogether.

Probably a CGI thing again with the Librarian
Oopsy, I didn't realise Death wasn't a puppet!
One thing that annoyed me though was that at the end of Part 1 you got a 10 minute synopsis of Part 2, then at the start of Part 2 you got 10 minutes of highlights from Part 1. Too much repetition for me, but then again Sky 1 is normally a channel associated with the hard of thinking...

This is my first posting on this board, but I've been a Pratchett obsessive since 1989.
Although I was worried beforehand, I thought the Sky production was generally pretty good. They stuck to the plot pretty well, considering there must have been many new non-fans watching, and rather than make a mess of the Librarian, I'm glad they avoided it. He is after all very important to most of us!
Having read the messages above about casting, I must say I'd never thought of Alan Rickman as the Patrician, but he would of course be perfect, as would Tony Robinson as Nobby, although maybe a bit old now. Vimes is one of my favourite characters and I always thought the late Bob Peck (Edge of Darkness) was the perfect Vimes, but am beginning to think in terms of Sean Bean now he's getting older. How about Bernard Hill? Too old?
For me, Stephanie Cole was born to play Granny Weatherwax (although I'll concede that Maggie Smith would be a pretty good second choice).

I did enjoy it, don't get me wrong, but I just had the slow Americanisation of British programmes I did love the introduction when the camera's zooming in from space right into A-M; the graphics of the Discworld itself were really impressive.
I'd love to see Penelope Keith as Granny, she's got just the right poise to pull it off Sean Bean as Vimes would work pretty well to. Just as long as Sean gets to keep his own accent - that would just top it all off

I always saw Robert Lindsay as Vimes, Dawn French as Sybil and (Anton Meyer off Holby who's name has completely deserted me, George Irving?????) as the Patrician. I also think Anne-Marie Duff would be fablus as Magrat, can't remember what I was watching when I came up with that one. Also Steven Fry is Ridcully in my head, I always hear his voice. Judi Dench apparently has a really filthy sense of humour, how about her as Nanny Ogg against Maggie Smith as Weatherwax?
