Who am I?

This is the home of Pearl. I hail from Cuyahoga Falls¹, Ohio, US of A. I currently find myself at the age of 17. I attend Cuyahoga Falls High School as a senior and hope to attend Carnegie Mellon University, Olin College of Engineering, or Ohio State University (go Bucks!) to study mechanical engineering. I have a very distinct sense of humour which is hard to fully appreciate. I also tend to have problems concentrating on one individual task at once.

Music

Music, in all forms, is one of my passions. I play french horn in the school's AA Symphonic Band, pit orchestra, and Akron Youth Symphony (principal for *the* Fifth Symphony). Some of my favourite pieces that we've played lately include Larry Daehn's With Quiet Courage, Do Not Go Gentle, and A Light Unto the Darkness². My current favourite horn solo is Hunter's Moon by Gilbert Vinter, and the best³ ensemble pieces are Shaw's Fripperies, Bippperies, and the like.

Engineering

To the best of my knowledge, I would like to be a mechanical engineer, with a focus in electrical engineering, as a career. I would like to work in automotives, but that's open to change in the next six or so years. I've attended two science camps, the most recent with a focus on engineering, and have found my major through these programs. The better of the two camps was held at the University of Dayton in Ohio and titled Women in Engineering (WIE). This program, over the course of a week, takes you through the different disciplines of engineering and engineering technology and lets you take part in an engineers day during (obviously named) Day with an Engineer. The program really gives you an upclose hands on approach to engineering, and I would highly suggest it to any female high school student who thinks she may have an interest in pursuing engineering. Some of the other activities included wiring a circuit board to count in binary, using a tensiometer (I shall look up the spelling in a few days, have no fear), working with college profesors and grad students, and building balsa wood towers for weight testing.
