England, My England

Ah - those distant horizons, smelling of rotting and new life! It's been 6 years since I visted the shores of my misspent youth. I couldn't live with it, but can't live without it. Stepping into any web-page and seeing references to home is like stepping into a solid fragment of time itself; this time never seems to change but echoes in an increasingly lugubrious manner, like footsteps in an empty room. So what do I miss about England? Well, people, for a start; old friends and complete strangers. Pubs and the beer - in small doses. Cricket. Slices of history. Bad food. Inane, hack journalism. Talentless and talented people that make it. The telly. Humour. The countryside, that is what is left of it. What I DON'T miss: The traffic. The hoardes of people. Unemployment. Moaning - the national pass-time. The weather. The violence. Ah well.... one day I'll return, if only for a visit...
