About Me
View from North Downs in Kent. (I was born close by).
Close by now.
I'm getting increasingly angry about what is happening to the rural landscape of Kent where I was born; some might say obsessed. And the vandalism, as I see it, of the landscape will only increase. Kent is traditionally called, 'The Garden of England'.
I visited Australia a few years ago and was affected by landscape there..very different to rural Kent..deserts and bush and so much space..but the intense feelings for it were similar. I got to learn a very limited amount about Aboriginal relationship to the land and conceptualisation. I think it started a process in me that has got stronger and stronger, and I got in touch with how much my early childhood was culturally shaped by running wild in the Kentish countryside with other kids..and learning so much about Nature.
We were a bit tribal when I think about it. They became more my family than my literal family.
We moved to a very dull area when I was seven, on a main road. I hated it..and my life was turned upside down...but that early time lives inside me really strongly; it probably influences my creative self..as a kind of desire to regain it in my inner self.
The Aboriginal idea of the Dreamtime is that it is always present..even though it refers to the past.
Landscape can be related to language. I was born with 1/4 mile of of the river Medway in Kent. If you are born on one bank you are a Maid of Kent...but on the other a Kentish Maid.
The river acts as a rift in two identical things which refer to identification. The very stuff of language though is like the stuff of landscape.
